As in the previous year, we surveyed more than 3,200 cruise experts and passengers and evaluated the wealth of experience with the Statista statistics portal. The answers help to find the perfect cruise. As in the previous year, we surveyed cruise experts and passengers - more than 3200 and one in four readers of GEO Saison - and evaluated the wealth of experience with the Statista statistics portal. In the current edition of Geo Saison 11/2017 we present the 30 best shipping companies and tour operators with their offers: from expeditions into the ice to river trips, Mediterranean and Pacific cruises, plus an overview table of the best ships. In addition to the print article, you will find top five lists of the ships, sorted by category, as well as the methodology of the survey.

The ranking in brief

Who or what was awarded?

The best shipping companies and tour operators in a total of eleven high seas regions, such as the Caribbean or the western Mediterranean, as well as in three river cruise areas, the Rhine, Danube and France. In addition, shipping companies / organizers received awards in four categories, such as classic cruises or expedition cruises. In addition, the best ships in ten areas (e.g. service, sports facilities or cabins) were examined.

Who was interviewed?

First, customers who have been on a cruise in the past three years were surveyed. On the basis of school grades (1 = very good, 6 = unsatisfactory), every cruise undertaken could be rated in ten assessment dimensions (e.g. family offers) and a total of 29 individual criteria (e.g. animation program for children, family discounts). The survey ran from April 26 to June 14, 2017. A total of 3,220 cruise customers completed the questionnaire in full. Following the customer survey, a survey among cruise experts was carried out from July 3 to July 21, 2017. The five interviewed experts were asked independently of one another about the quality of the cruise lines and cruise ships in the various shipping areas and cruise categories. It was also assessed using school grades (1 = very good, 6 = unsatisfactory).

How were the best determined?

The overall rating consists of the customer rating and the expert rating. The overall rating is based on the weighted average of the two ratings, with the customer rating contributing 75% and the expert rating 25% to the overall rating. Only shipping companies / organizers and ships were included in the list whose overall rating is above the mean value in the respective sailing area or category. A mention in the list is in any case a positive award that sets it apart from the competition.
