Enjoy your free time and switch off your head? These six fun activities can help you relax and get smarter.
Lots of pawns, two rooks, one king - chess has been around since the 6th century and is believed to have come from India. The strategic board game trains your gray matter: It promotes creative thinking and the ability to solve and plan problems. After all, you always have to anticipate your play partner's next move. In addition, chess promotes the ability to concentrate, which is also good for school. So you can still concentrate on math in the sixth lesson.
Watch the original series
Sometimes you feel like doing nothing at all. Get on the couch, turn on the TV and let yourself be showered. But even there there is an opportunity to get smarter! For example, by watching your favorite series in the original language. Simply switch on the subtitles of the original language and you will learn new words with every broadcast. In English, it works great with series like “The Big Bang Theory”, and French can also be improved if you watch the adventures of Tintin or “Les Aventures de Tintin” in the original. There are good series and films for every language that you can use to improve your language skills. And language learning helps you train your gray matter and solve more complex tasks, as you use several areas in the brain at the same time.
You don't have to be a virtuoso - but learning an instrument will give your brain a boost. It doesn't matter which instrument you play: grab a guitar or sit down at a keyboard. As you make music and practice, not only do the areas of hearing and movement improve, but your hand coordination also becomes finer. After all, “Für Elise” has to be played with two hands.
Working creatively is good for the brain. While painting, you can relax and keep your gray matter busy. Here, too, there is no claim to performance: You decide what and how you paint, whether it's blotches, lines or portraits. Painting strengthens the brain and reduces stress. In addition, various knowledge contents are linked, so that painting can also improve memory performance.
There is no denying it: exercise is good for your health. Exercise is essential not only for physical, but also for mental fitness. Running, cycling and swimming improve concentration and the ability to solve complex tasks. As you exercise, you reduce stress and release endorphins. Your brain oxygen supply is boosted and you can learn better after exercising. And that makes you smart and fit.
Doing nothing is also a hobby. And not even that easy! When meditating, memory and concentration are strengthened. You learn to gain a broader view of your environment and to concentrate only on the things that are important and that can change. This will make you calmer and more focused. Smart! OM!
