The importance of knowledge management for the success of companies is generally accepted. To measure the contribution to success of knowledge management in hard key figures and to fix things is a challenge. In 2003 the management consultancy McKinsey & Company published a benchmark study entitled “Knowledge decides” in which 40 well-known companies in the manufacturing industry were examined. The aim of the study was to identify knowledge management measures that are critical for success and whose consistent implementation distinguishes successful from less successful companies. In short, McKinsey was able to show a connection between corporate success and the consistent application of certain knowledge management measures.
