St. Louis is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States in the early 19th century. The climate and landscape, but above all the feeling of being among one's own kind, ensure a large influx of German emigrants. Eberhard Anheuser landed here in 1844. At first he traded successfully in fuel and candles. When one of his customers, a beer brewer, cannot pay, he takes over his business.

Adolphus Busch, born in what is now Mainz-Kastel, also emigrated to America. He sells brewery supplies in St. Louis. At Eberhard Anheuser's company, the young representative meets his 17-year-old daughter Lilly and falls in love with her. The two get married. Adolphus Busch is a visionary. With a wealth of ideas and drive, he can convince Lilly's father that - despite the lack of training - he is the right person to manage his beer business.

Other brewers from the southwest are also making the leap to America. Dick Yuengling's great-great-great-grandfather, David G. Jüngling, emigrated to the United States in 1825 to avoid military service. In 1829 the master brewer from Aldingen in Württemberg founded the "Eagle Brewery" in Pottsville / Pennsylvania.

Pottsville is a good location for a brewery. The industry is booming. The city is growing rapidly. Above all, the many German immigrants are in the mood for porter, ale and lager, the three types of beer that David G. Yuengling, as he now calls himself, initially brews.

At Sigmaringen Castle in the Danube Valley, the young Friedrich Müller was appointed court brewer to the last ruling Hohenzollern prince in 1849. But in times of political upheaval, he too wants more. Opportunities for advancement, freedom for himself and his family, the good prospects for well-trained craftsmen - all of this attracts Müller. He and his family move to the USA.

The move begins with a personal tragedy: Upon arrival, his wife Josephine and all of their children die. But Friedrich Müller does not give up. After a trip up the Mississippi, Friedrich, who will soon be called Fred, ends up in Milwaukee. Here he lays the foundation stone for one of the largest German-American brewery empires.

Tim John is the great-grandson of Friedrich Müller, who set out for America from Swabia in 1854. He knows the secret of his great-grandfather's success: in order to brew beer as good as in Sigmaringen, Frederick Miller, as he soon called himself, brought his own special yeast with him from home.

Frederick Miller's brewery is a little way out of town, right on a country road into the hinterland. This is where the farmers come by when they are on their way into town to sell their products.

The meeting point for farmers will soon become a beer garden. Fred Miller hits a nerve with his immigrant compatriots. The beer garden is becoming a popular destination for the whole family. There is music and German specialties: sausage, cheese and of course good beer.

The German breweries are expanding. To temporarily store their beer, they build large depots at railway stations. Many of these structures become landmarks.

The beer needs to be cooled. The Anheuser-Busch brewery first gets its ice cream from the Mississippi. But soon she was making ice cream herself. The company is one of the first in America to invest in automatic refrigeration technology and build its own refrigerated wagons

In search of a beer that meets the taste of the times, Adolphus Busch travels to Bohemia. He struck gold in Budweis in the Czech Republic. He imitates the great tasting beer and calls it like the original: Budweiser!

Lotsie Busch, great-granddaughter of Adolphus Busch senior: Your great-grandfather invested a lot of money in new filling technology. Beer was bottled in glass. Bottle caps prevented the carbon dioxide from evaporating. The beer stayed fresh and retained its taste - a milestone in beer production.

Budweiser beer makes the Anheuser-Busch family rich. At the gates of St. Louis is Grant‘s Farm, the stately home of the Anheuser-Busch family. The bush clan, which is rich in children, is creating a landscaped garden with a zoo, which is also open to the citizens of St. Louis.

Adolphus Busch dies in Germany on his Villa Lilly estate. He is buried in his new home in St. Louis. When the body arrives there, it is taken to the brewery premises. There the thousands pay their last respects to him. The trams in the US state of Missouri shut down and there are minutes of silence everywhere in his honor.
