Avast not updating automatically

I have used avast for several yrs on my xp laptop and it always automatically updates once, sometimes twice, a day.

I have Home Premium 64-bit; is there some kind of known problem or does it need updating less on 64-bit/ I would hardly think so.
Since Thursday I have manually updated avast and it insists 'program is up to date etc' but today i manually updated and it did update to release date 13/3/2010.
